Dragon’s Breath:

Our final chapters on what makes Pai Lum “Pai Lum” is a deeper look at Grandmaster Pai’s poem, ‘The Dragon Code’ ‘I am what I am because I choose to be – I am a dragon by choice and subject to its laws’ The first quarter of this poem, which we will delve into in this article, begins by giving an important parameter in life that helps define who we are. Choices. Somethings in life we cannot choose.  We didn’t get to choose our parents or family.  We don’t (at first) get to choose where we live.   But many things we do get to choose – and the more life we live the more choices we generally get – what to eat, where we work, what we play, and we choose our friends. If you are training in Pai Lum (our martial art) then it was probably because you chose to be.  Some very few youth the parents insisted. But those students can still choose their attitude whether to embrace the training or resist it. One thing is sure of all our choices – they all help define who we are and who we become.  They help give us identity. Who we chose our friends to be, for example, will define our tastes and values.  We tend to become like those we hang out with.  So if we hang with people who love to party, we become more partiers.  If we hang with those who love to read books, we will likely start reading more.  If people we live with speak the truth we will learn from them and if they lie we will learn from them.    So I am what I am in great part because of what I choose. And if you are in our Pai Lum family then you are a dragon by choice.  And you are subject to the ‘laws’ we have in class – the discipline, the ideas – both as an art and our values.   And you will learn our codes and values.  You are welcome to disagree with them, but you will at the least learn them if you are here long enough.  And those codes as well as the art and the people that are here will all influence you.  So be it if you want to be Pai Lum dragon.  Embrace your choices!  Or make new ones!
