Dragon’s Breath: (Part 3/10) The nine animals of Pai Lum
The White Crane – The crane’s approach to fighting is quite unique. Exuding calm and confidence the crane studies its opponent from a distance waiting and welcoming an opportunity to attack. It looks down from its flight of height not in arrogance but in certainty of its advantage from noting other’s weak points. The crane remains balanced. Just as it needs two wings to fly the crane doesn’t rely on just aggression or defense, but synergizes them both to balance its needs of victory. The crane knows when to take off in flight again, but also when to surge down upon its prey. And when it does the crane is incredibly vicious. Many masters consider the crane the most savage of the 9 animals as it shreds its prey with a flurry of beak and wing strikes. Where in life do I remain calm in the place of threat and conflict, ready to soar in and tackle problems with a flurry of hard work, strategy or conflict resolution? When do I stay balanced and not tipped over, crashing, or ‘freaked out’ in the midst of turmoil and pressure? We can learn these virtues from the crane – both for living and defending lives.
